Northern Territory Rugby Union (NTRU) in response to an incident involving several players who were recently sanctioned under NRL NT confirms the outcome of their review.
After careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders we have imposed a 10-week suspension on the players involved. When their suspension ends, they will return to the game under a strict Good Behaviour Bond — a clear last chance to meet the standards expected in our sport.
Our Position
We want to be absolutely clear:
- Violence and poor conduct have no place in our sport.
- We expect better from our players – on and off the field.
- This decision is about accountability and rehabilitation.
While another code has imposed bans, we have applied a sanction that reflects both the seriousness of the behaviour and our commitment to helping players learn and improve. The Good Behaviour Bond is a last-chance measure - any breach of conduct will result in immediate and significant consequences, including potential suspension and a strike against their club.
Why a Good Behaviour Bond?
Our role as a sporting body extends beyond punishment. We believe in the power of sport to teach resilience, discipline, and respect. This approach balances:
- Accountability: The players are formally on notice.
- Fairness: Each code must apply its own rules and processes.
- Rehabilitation: Players have an opportunity to demonstrate personal growth and rebuild trust within our community.
Looking Ahead
As part of their bond, players will:
- Commit to upholding the values of NTRU
- Participate in behaviour and values education programs.
- Serve as positive role models for younger players.
We don’t condone what happened, it was unacceptable. But we also know that people can learn from their mistakes. This is their chance to prove they can represent our game and community with integrity. The message is clear: step up, or step out.
