NT Rugby referees boss Robbie Taylor has lauded the “well deserved” appointment of a rising Top End match official to Australia’s top amateur tournament.

Julius Appo is the NT’s sole match official selection to oversee the upcoming Australian Rugby Shield, in which Northern Territory will tackle the likes of South Australia, Queensland Country, Tasmania and other non-professional state outfits.

Appo’s star has been rising in the Darwin competition for some time now, having been named Junior Referee of the Year in 2021, Most Improved Referee in 2022 and Senior Referee of the Year in 2023.

Taylor described Appo as a “natural talent” who has “more than earned his opportunity” on the national stage.

“I’m pretty relieved to be honest, he’s worked bloody hard to get here over the past four years,” Taylor said.

“He did a great job with the Senior B-Grade final this past season and has been playing footy and working on his fitness in the offseason as well.

“Refereeing at the ARS is a massive step up but I think he’ll be up for the challenge – he’s got a natural ability and sees the game really well – and how good to see an NT ref at this level.”

NT Rugby CEO Nathan McDonald said Appo’s appointment was a testament to the ongoing efforts of Taylor and other long serving referee coaches and mentors.

“Our match officials put incredible time and effort into not just their own performance, but ensuring the next generation of NT refs are up to task,” McDonald said.

“Julius has been one of our best these past three years and it’s exciting to see him get this opportunity at ARS level.”

The Australian Rugby Shield kicks off late September at Brisbane’s Ballymore Stadium.
